Ethos Insurance — Company Profile

What it is: an online life insurance platform — a licensed insurance agency, not an insurance company. Ethos was founded in 2016 by Peter Colis and Lingke Wang. It sells term life insurance online in 49 states and DC (it is not licensed in New York), and the policies themselves are issued by established partner carriers. Most applicants skip the medical exam and get a decision in minutes. Ethos is a public company (Nasdaq: LIFE, IPO January 2026).
Verdict: Legit Our rating: Not yet rated — the evidence check is published (see the legit check); numeric scoring with visible inputs is in progress, and we do not publish a number without them.
Ethos is a legitimate, licensed insurance producer — a public company whose policies are issued by established carriers. The checks that matter are different from a carrier’s: there is no Ethos AM Best rating or complaint index, because Ethos is not the insurer. What matters is which partner carrier issues your policy, and whether the no-exam convenience costs more than a fully underwritten policy for the same coverage. Full verdict evidence: Is Ethos legit?
The evidence
- Identity & structure: founded 2016 by Peter Colis and Lingke Wang; a licensed insurance producer (agency), not an insurer — it does not underwrite policies and holds no insurance-company rating. Publicly traded on Nasdaq under the ticker LIFE after a January 29, 2026 IPO priced at $19/share.
- Who issues the policies: a corroborated core set of partner carriers: Banner Life / Legal & General America, Ameritas, TruStage, Protective, and Mutual of Omaha. The carrier named on your policy documents is your insurer — its ratings and complaint record are the ones that apply to you.
- Where it sells: licensed in 49 states + DC — not New York. Term coverage is offered to applicants aged 20–65.
- How it sells: fully online application; most applicants skip the medical exam and receive a decision in minutes. No-exam convenience can cost more than a fully underwritten policy elsewhere, so the same face amount is worth pricing both ways.
- Financial strength: not applicable to Ethos itself — it is not a carrier. Financial strength belongs to the issuing carrier; Ethos’s partner carriers are rated A or better (per MoneyGeek’s 2026 review). Check the rating of the specific carrier on your quote.

Ethos questions
Is Ethos an insurance company?
No. Ethos is a licensed insurance agency (producer). It sells and services the application, but your policy is issued — and your claim is paid — by one of its partner carriers, such as Banner Life, Ameritas, TruStage, Protective, or Mutual of Omaha. The carrier’s name is on your policy documents.
Why is there no AM Best rating or complaint index for Ethos?
Both measures apply to insurance carriers. Ethos is not a carrier, so it has no AM Best Financial Strength Rating and no NAIC complaint index. Judge the issuing carrier’s rating instead — and note that our standard complaint compilation covers auto insurance only in any case.
Why does this profile say “Not yet rated”?
We publish a numeric score only with the inputs behind it visible on the page. This company’s evidence check (on our Is It Legit page) is complete; its full numeric scoring is in progress, so the honest label is “Not yet rated” rather than an invented number.
