Trupanion Insurance — Company Profile

Trupanion logo

What it is: a pet insurer with a single, deliberately simple plan design: one accident-and-illness plan paying a fixed 90% of covered bills, with no payout caps. The company dates its founding to 2000 (it began as Vetinsurance in Canada, founded by Darryl Rawlings, and moved its headquarters to Seattle in 2007). It is headquartered in Seattle, Washington, is publicly traded (NASDAQ: TRUP), and — unusually — underwrites its own U.S. policies through its own insurance subsidiary.

Verdict: Legit  Our rating: Not yet rated — the evidence check is published (see the legit check); numeric scoring with visible inputs is in progress, and we do not publish a number without them.

Trupanion is a real, licensed pet insurer — publicly traded, and self-underwritten through its own American Pet Insurance Company rather than a third-party carrier. The practical question is fit: one plan, no customisation dials, a per-condition deductible structure that rewards long-held coverage, and permanent exclusion of pre-existing conditions (including curable ones) that is stricter than some rivals. Trupanion questions

Who underwrites Trupanion policies?

Trupanion’s own insurance subsidiary, American Pet Insurance Company (APIC). Unlike most pet brands — which are marketing names on another insurer’s paper — Trupanion is self-underwritten, so the brand and the insurer are the same group.

How is Trupanion’s deductible different?

It is per-condition and lifetime: you meet the deductible once for each condition, and it never resets for that condition (most rivals use an annual deductible that resets every policy year). That structure gets better the longer you keep the policy — and pays less across many unrelated conditions in a single year.

Why does this profile say “Not yet rated”?

We publish a numeric score only with the inputs behind it visible on the page. This company’s evidence check (on our Is It Legit page) is complete; its full numeric scoring is in progress, so the honest label is “Not yet rated” rather than an invented number.

Sources (checked October 2026): Founding — the company’s own GlobeNewswire boilerplate states “founded in 2000”; it began as Vetinsurance in Vancouver, founded by Darryl Rawlings, HQ moved to Seattle in 2007 (company releases; Wikipedia; company-history timeline). NASDAQ: TRUP (company releases). Underwriting by American Pet Insurance Company, its wholly owned subsidiary (Trupanion policy disclosure; Wikipedia). Plan facts — fixed 90% reimbursement, per-condition lifetime deductible $0–$1,000, no payout caps, VetDirect Pay, enrollment to the 14th birthday, permanent pre-existing exclusion, exam fees not covered (Trupanion materials; TopConsumerReviews Trupanion review, Oct 2026; Compare.com). The founding years 1998/1999 also circulate; we use the company’s own 2000.
