Is State Farm legit?
Short profile: State Farm is a mutual insurance group founded in 1922 and headquartered in Bloomington, Illinois. Its parent, State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company, is owned by policyholders, and it is the largest private-passenger auto insurer in the United States (NAIC 2024), selling mainly through roughly 19,000 local agents.
Verdict: Legit
State Farm is a legitimate, licensed, century-old insurer with the largest U.S. auto market share and a below-average regulator complaint index. The caution is about fit, not legitimacy: buying is agent-led and pricing is opaque until you apply. Verdict dated October 22, 2026; we re-check when the underlying evidence changes.
The 5-point evidence checklist
- PassRegistration & identity — Founded June 7, 1922, by George J. Mecherle; headquartered in Bloomington, Illinois; parent is State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company, a policyholder-owned mutual insurer; official site statefarm.com; approximately 19,000 agents.
- ConcernPricing transparency — Prices are individualised and agent-led: you can start a quote online, but real pricing requires submitting your details, and policies are typically completed through an agent. Published “average” prices from third-party studies vary widely.
- PassComplaints pattern — NAIC complaint index (auto) of 0.79 — below the 1.00 benchmark, i.e. fewer complaints than expected for the largest auto insurer in the country (NAIC 2024 data, compiled Aug 2026).
- Not foundRefund & cancellation terms — We could not find a single public page stating cancellation and refund terms; they live in individual policy documents and state rules. Ask your agent for the cancellation terms in writing before you buy.
- PassIndependent evidence — NAIC market-share data (largest U.S. auto insurer, 18.9% share, 2024) and AM Best’s affirmation of an A++ (Superior) Financial Strength Rating for State Farm Mutual provide independent corroboration. Ratings can change — verify the current rating at AM Best.
Complaints and pricing notes
A complaint index below 1.00 at State Farm’s scale is a genuinely good sign — the largest insurer in the country generates complaint volume in line with, or better than, its size. On pricing: third-party studies put State Farm’s averages in very different places (for example, $2,883/yr average full coverage in one Arizona study, above that study’s state average), which is normal for an agent-sold insurer whose price depends heavily on the individual risk. The only State Farm price that matters is a quote at your limits, on your record.
